Accommodations are made from various densities of EVA* and PORON*
materials determined by our lab based on patient weight/condition and predetermined practitioner preferences.

Heel cushioning

PORON or very soft EVA pad placed in the entire area of the heel cup.

Indications: Heel pain, heel spur, reduced fibro-fatty pad, mild plantar fasciitis.

Horseshoe or U-pad

EVA pad with U-shaped cut-out in area of medial calcaneal tubercle.

Indications: Centrally located bilateral heel spurs.

Heel hole cut-out

Cavity in shell of device located at the insertion of the plantar fascia to calcaneus, can be filled with PORON or soft EVA upon request.

Indications: Plantar fasciitis, heel spur.

Heel lift

Leg length discrepancies, especially small ones, can only be accurately diagnosed with medical imaging. Both x-rays and CT scans have been demonstrated to be highly accurate. We at Accuthotix are recommending that you use the method that involves x-raying the patient in a standing position with the central ray passing through the femoral heads. Of course it is essential to make sure that your floor is level. This split view of the pelvis and lumbar spine is used to measure the heights of the femoral heads. If the femoral head heights differ more than 5mm and the spine deviates towards the short leg side, then a heel lift is recommended. The size of the heel lift should begin at 33% of the femoral head height difference. The Doctor can decide whether to use heel lifts, or to have the orthotics fabricated with a heel lift. Children should not have the heel lift fabricated to the orthotic because they may grow out of the short leg syndrome. You can read more about heel lift therapy under Short Leg Syndrome.

  • * EVA: Ethylene vinyl acetate is the copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate. It’s an extremely elastic material that can be sintered to form a porous material similar to rubber, yet with excellent toughness. It is resistant to cracks and ultra violet radiation.
  • * PORON: cellular urethanes are engineered, medium density, microcellular (cells are roughly 100 microns) foam material. They are used in orthopedic and prosthetic applications, including custom orthotics, custom prefabricated orthotics, prosthetic padding and other biomechanical supports. PORON is a good shock attenuator and is very durable. It is commonly used as the middle layer of laminated soft orthotics. It is not good cover due to its poor abrasion resistance.
